Aston Villa sack Roberto Di Matteo

Roberto Di Matteo was sacked by Aston Villa on Monday after just 12 matches in charge of the troubled Championship club.
Di Matteo was hired by Villa’s new Chinese owner Tony Xia in June and the former Chelsea boss was expected to lead his side into the Premier League.
Villa are playing in the second tier for the first time since 1988 following last season’s relegation, but they have struggled to show any improvement under Di Matteo despite splashing out on several expensive new signings.
Saturday’s woeful 2-0 defeat at Preston, which ended with Villa booed off by their furious fans, proved the final straw and 48 hours later the Italian’s 124-day reign was over.
“Aston Villa Football Club has today parted company with manager Roberto Di Matteo,” a statement read.
“The club decided to act following a run of disappointing results which has left the team occupying 19th position in the Championship.
“The Club would like to place on record its appreciation to Roberto for all his efforts in helping rebuild the squad and wish him well for the future.”
Di Matteo won only one of his 11 Championship fixtures, while also crashing out of the League Cup against fourth tier Luton.
The 46-year-old leaves with Villa languishing just two points above the relegation zone in 19th place after a nine-match winless run.
Steve Clarke will take over as Villa’s caretaker manager while the club begin their search for a replacement during the international break.
Former Hull boss Steve Bruce, Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy and Brentford chief Dean Smith are among the early contenders to succeed Di Matteo.

1,000 houses to go for Lagos-Abeokuta road expansion

Residents of Abule-Egba yesterday protested against the State Government’s plan to demolish over 1,000 houses and shops for the expansion of the Lagos-Abeokuta Road.
The residents accused the government of reneging on its agreement with property owners. They said, rather than continue the project based on the agreed 32 metres from the old electric poles, the government last week extended portions for demolition to 91.44 metres.
They alleged that the government planned to render them homeless, adding that they were told that the demolition of marked structures would start tomorrow.
The residents claimed that the development has left four aged landladies hospitalised, including Mrs. Soyebatu Atobajaye, adding that over 10,000 people would be jobless if government went ahead with the plan.
According to them, a September 22 letter from the Ministry of Physical Planning, signed by F.A. Danboyi, notifying them of the 91.44 metres Right of Way (RoW) also directed that they should within seven days, provide documents validating their ownership
But when they took their documents to the ministry, the residents alleged that they were asked to vacate the premises to pave the way for demolition. They discribed the directive as “anti-people.”
It was gathered that structures from Super to Awori, a distance that falls under the Oke-Odo, Ojokoro and Orile-Agege constituencies would be affected if the markings of last Tuesday were allowed to stand.
A community leader, Alhaji Jimoh Agbaje, whose two properties at 374 and 376 Abeokuta Expressway were affected by the new markings, appealed to the government to stick to the previous ones.
He said: “I bought this property (376) in 1976 and commenced building in 1979. If you look at it, you would see that I have over 100 feet from the covert. I did not build on the RoW. Yet, I agreed to leave 32 metres of my land for the project since it was for our development.
“We had a meeting with the Commissioner for Physical Planning, Wasiu Anifowoshe on September 20. He never told us that the government was planning to take more of our lands. Then, on September 22, I got a letter indicating that about 78 feets would be taken out of my plots, not including the 32 metres I have voluntarily given.
“The problem now is that, for them to take the 78 feets, they would demolish 11 shops and part of my building. In as much as we love the project, the government should not render us homeless and jobless. I have 11 employees who would lose their jobs if my office is demolished. Then over 200 persons would be laid off at plot 374 because I have 42 shops there occupied by people who also employed people.
“We are appealing to them to be considerate. This is the people’s government. They should know that the ripple effect would affect over 10,000 people. It is not as if we are affecting the construction. They should stick to the initial agreement of 32 metres from the pole and complete the project, which is about 50 percent done.”
A widow, Chief Grace Santos, whose husband retired as a permanent secretary, lamented the planned demolition of her shops and house, saying she has nowhere to go to.
The widow, who said the shops were her means of livelihood, added that the house was the only property acquired by her late husband.
She said: “With these new markings, my shops would be demolished and half of my building would go too. Where do I go to with my children and grandchildren? I have pregnant women in my home. Do they want us to starve to death or sleep on the streets?
“So many people have developed hypertension since the notice was served and the new markings done. About four elderly women are on admission in the hospital. It is not easy, especially with the current hardship in the country. The government should reconsider.”
Contacted, Physical Planning and Urban Development Commissioner, Wasiu Anifowoshe said he was working based on designs from the Ministry of Works.
He said: “Abeokuta Expressway is a Federal Government project. The government has acquired the Right of Way which has been effected. It was the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure that gave my Ministry the drawings, so I am working based on the advice from the Ministry of Works. I advise you to contact the Ministry of Works for reaction.”

I did not lobby to be vice president - Osinbajo

Yemi Osinbajo says he never lobbied anybody before he became the vice president of Nigeria. Osinbajo speaking at a service of the Olive Tree Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Lagos on Sunday, October 2, attributed he becoming the vice president of Nigeria to God’s intervention.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the vice president also said Nigeria has gone forward as it turned 56 years and would continue to move forward.

Speaking on the backdrop of challenges facing the nation, the vice president likened the situation the country is presently in to biblical times when the nation of Israel were coming out of Egypt.

Osinbajo recalled that while he was praying recently, the Lord reminded him of something he asked him to do on the eve of the 2015 presidential election.

He said that God asked him to take the communion because he was crossing over and when he did (take the communion), God took him through the journey from Egypt to the Promised Land.

Recalling the Israelites journey from Egypt to the promise land, he said the first thing that happened was that God himself said if he took the children of Israel through the path where the Philistines lived, they would be afraid and would be asked to return to Egypt.

The vice president explained that God took the people through the Red Sea because of their fears. Continuing his biblical allusion, Osinbajo said by the time the Israelites were about crossing the sea, there was a fight back from where they were coming from as Pharaoh chased them and wanted to bring them back.

He said the incident got Moses confused as he did not know what to do as God never told him there would be a Red Sea, a difficulty, in the journey. The vice president added that if God was with us, no one would be against us.

He said: “The reason why I, Yemi Osinbajo, without asking for a position, was given the Vice Presidency of this nation is because God’s hand is in this business. And so, I am completely confident that despite where we are today, it is the dawn of a new beginning.

“It has begun to show and surely there is a very bright light at the end of the tunnel.”

He noted that “God knows that this country has a plan and purpose in Africa and in the world; the land and purpose will never diminish or be cut short.”

Osinbajo urged Christians to be steadfast in times of difficulty, he said the role of Christians as spiritual people was not to grumble. He told the parish that they had a role to play in making the country great.

Meanwhile, the threat by President Muhammadu Buhari to deal with Niger Delta militants blowing up oil and gas installations has attracted criticism from some leaders from the Niger Delta region.

The president made the threat during his Independence Day speech on Saturday, October 1, where he said his administration will not allow mindless groups to hold the country to ransom.

Buhari also said no group can unlawfully challenge the authority of the federal government and succeed. However, the president’s Independence Day speech has attracted criticism from across states in the south-south region.

Sex worker sells two-year-old daughter in Lagos

The police in Lagos State have arrested a woman, identified as Grace Onome, for allegedly selling her two-year-old child in the Badagry area of the state.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Onome was arrested on Saturday by the Badagry Police Division after a tip-off.
Our correspondent gathered that four accomplices, who allegedly aided the sale of the girl, were also arrested by the police.
It was learnt that the sold daughter, identified as Zainab, had yet to be found.
Our correspondent gathered that Onome, who worked as a commercial sex worker in the Mobil area of Badagry, allegedly sold Zainab to another sex worker, identified only as Endurance.
A police source at the division said operatives were on the trail of Endurance in order to rescue Zainab.
He said, “It was on Saturday that Grace (Onome) and Endurance had the transaction. They are both commercial sex workers in the area.
“Endurance gave Zainab’s mother N50,000, before taking the girl away. The mother said she used the money to buy a few things for herself.
“The fleeing buyer is of no fixed address. But the police are on her trail.”
A child rights’ worker, Ebenezer Omejalile, said a request had been made to the police to have the case transferred to the Gender Unit, Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, for more investigation.
He said, “Child rights’ workers in the Badagry area are monitoring the case. It is being investigated by the surveillance section of the police division.
“The woman is a commercial sex worker and she sold the girl to a fellow commercial sex worker, who fled with the girl to a yet-to-be-ascertained location to resell her.
“We want the matter to be transferred to the gender unit of the police in Ikeja, where proper investigation will be done.
“We are worried that the victim has yet to be rescued by the police. Our contact persons in the Badagry area have been detailed to work with the police, and they will follow up on that matter.”
A source told our correspondent that the accomplices arrested with Onome were released on bail on Saturday.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed Onome’s arrest.
She added that efforts were ongoing to track the suspected buyer of the girl.
She said, “The mother has been arrested and she confessed to be a commercial sex worker. Effort is ongoing to track the fleeing suspected buyer and the child.”

How INEC manipulated Edo election result - PDP

The Rivers state chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has faulted the poll result released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the just concluded governorship election in Edo state.

The party in a statement by the publicity secretary of PDP in the state, Mr Nwanosike Sam, over the weekend in Port Harcourt, accused INEC of manipulating the Edo poll in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to Vanguard, the party spokesperson alleged that the result finally released by INEC on the election did not tally with what was collated at most of the polling units in Edo state.

He warned that such alleged irregularity will not be tolerated in the coming re-run elections in Rivers state.

The party said: “The result that was announced in Edo State did not correspond with the results collated from most of the polling units. We commend former President Jonathan for showing Nigerians that he could supervise a credible election.

As an opposition party candidate, the outgoing governor of Edo State won an election conducted by the PDP.  But today, they will not allow the will of the people in that state to prevail.”

The PDP called on INEC to fix a date for the re-run elections in Rivers State, but warned that the people will resist any attempt by the electoral body to announce result for Tai local government area of the state. It said no re-run election took place there in the last March 19 re-run election. Nwanosike Sam later admitted about 1,500 members of the APC in Ubima community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state, who decamped to the PDP.

Meanwhile, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the recently concluded Edo state election has opened up after his loss.

Ize-Iyamu who spoke with Vanguard after his defeat by Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has now said he is committing his counterparts into the hands of God. While thanking the people of the state for pouring out en masse to vote their choice candidate, the clergyman stated that the result of the election has brought gloom and sadness to the people of the state, but that he would not want anyone to take laws into their hands.

Kim Kardashian robbed of millions in Paris

Kim Kardashian

US reality television star Kim Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint at a luxury Paris residence by assailants disguised as police who made off with millions, mainly in jewellery, French police and her representative said Monday.
A spokesperson for Kardashian said she was “badly shaken but physically unharmed” after the assault, which occurred late on Sunday.
Paris police said the items stolen were worth “several million euros” and were “mostly jewellery”.
The spokesperson said “two armed masked men dressed as police officers” had entered Kardashian’s residence in a chic district of Paris and held her up at gunpoint.
On hearing the news, Kardashian’s husband, rap superstar Kanye West, abruptly ended an appearance at a festival in New York, citing a “family emergency”.
Kardashian, one of the most recognisable US celebrities, had made a series of high-profile appearances at Paris fashion week.
The 35-year-old had attended catwalk shows by Balenciaga and Givenchy on Sunday and had also appeared at a launch for Armenian-American jewellery designer Siran Manoukian.
The Los Angeles-born designer and socialite, a longtime friend of Kardashian, was launching her own clothing label Maison Siran.
A spokeswoman for Maison Siran told AFP that their jewellery was “extremely premium”, but could not confirm that Kardashian had been loaned any of it, as is often the case for fashion shows and film premieres.
On Monday, a gaggle of journalists and fans gathered outside the red painted door of the luxury residence where Kardashian had been staying in the Madeleine district of Paris near the city’s main department stores.
A waiter at a cafe opposite said: “Only stars stay there. Kanye West, Jay Z. Kim Kardashian has been there for a week, I have seen her coming and going.”
Kardashian was last week approached in Paris by Vitalii Sediuk, who carries out pranks on stars. He was caught on video attempting to kiss her behind in an apparent social commentary.
Kardashian, who has two children with West, has been a fixture of US celebrity news for more than a decade after the leak of a sex tape and on the back of reality show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians”.
– Swift exit for Kanye –
West learned about the assault as he headlined a music festival in New York.
One of the biggest draws in live music, West took to the stage half an hour late but in dramatic fashion with a fireworks show overhead as he ripped into songs from his latest album “The Life of Pablo.”
However, an hour into his set, West said mid-song, “I’m sorry, show’s over,” and quickly left the stage.
A festival representative took the microphone to declare a 10-minute intermission before quickly returning to say that West had a “family emergency” and had already left the venue.
The festival later issued a statement praising West for a “great show” and said: “Our thoughts are with West and his family.”
West had flown to Paris to appear with his wife and her sister Kourtney Kardashian on Thursday during a one-day break in his North American tour.
Amid an initial lack of details over his swift exit, many fans at the festival were distraught as they poured out of the venue into the parking lot of the New York Mets’ baseball stadium.
Kardashian and West are frequent visitors to France. In 2014, they threw a lavish private party at the Versailles chateau near Paris during a no-expense-spared tour of Europe to celebrate their wedding.

Fayose, Aregbesola disagree on sale of national assets

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, and his from Osun State counterpart, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola have disagreed over the need to sell national assets to finance the 2016 budget.
While Aregbesola urged the Federal Government to sell ‘idle’ national assets and spare the functional ones, Fayose opposed the idea, arguing that selling them would amount to auctioning Nigeria.
The duo spoke in Ado Ekiti during an interactive forum which was part of the activities lined up to mark the 20th anniversary of the creation of Ekiti State. They, however, canvassed regional integration and cooperation as well as the revival of agriculture as some of the steps to revive national economy.
Aregbesola, who delivered a lecture entitled, “The imperative of unity,” said the biting economic problem was such that in the whole of the South-West region, only Lagos State could stand on its own.
He stressed the need to intensify efforts to revive agriculture, end oil pipeline vandalism and promote regional integration for meaningful development.
He said, “We should revive agriculture, especially food production. Agriculture gives us raw materials for industries and aids in no small measure in economic development. If we can improve on our productivity in food production through agriculture, we will eliminate hunger in our land.
“I want to urge Nigerians to end the ongoing vandalism of oil pipelines as the militants’ activities have been reducing the nation’s daily oil productivity level to between 700,000 and one million per barrel.
“The current vandalism of oil pipeline by the Niger Delta militants is robbing the nation of oil production of 700,000 to one million per barrel on a daily basis. This amounts to a huge loss of oil revenue to the country and has further led to the current recession in the country. An urgent concerted effort is therefore needed to stop the vandalism so that the country could get out of the recession.”
Aregbesola added, “It is high time the Yoruba nation and indeed the South-West united in terms of integrating our development strategies in education, commerce, economy, agriculture and tourism among others. There is no reason we should not unite for the best.
“The truth is that no Yoruba state, with the exception of Lagos State, can survive alone without collaborating with sister states. Therefore, we have to come together, pull together our abundant human and material resources.”
The governor described Ekiti people as men of integrity and courage and urged them to continue to support their governor for the development of the country.
“I congratulate all Ekiti people on the 20th anniversary of the creation of your state, my state, our state. You fought the Ekiti Parapo War which is an indication of unity of purpose. There is strength in unity.”
But Fayose, in his remarks, said selling the national assets was like selling Nigeria at a give-away price.
“Selling our national assets simply amounts to auctioning Nigeria. If we sell the assets because the country is in recession, what would be left of Nigeria?
“What would we call our own? Selling of assets is like moving the country backward. If we sell the assets to finance this year’s budget what would we sell next year? The Federal Government should look beyond its party and assemble economists and financial experts that would assist the President in his drive to bring the nation out of the present economic quagmire.”
Urging the Federal Government to uphold the principles of justice and equity, which he said were germane to building democracy, the governor said, “Justice is very important and without it, democracy is already endangered. If people are now beginning to contest against the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies for manipulation of elections, then democracy is endangered. It is political parties that are supposed to contest elections and not people contesting against inadequacies of the electoral umpire.”
