A 49-year-old man, Wasiu Arogege, is currently being questioned over the rape of a 19-year-old (names withheld) undergraduate of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos. Lagos CP, Fatai Owoseni It was gathered that the victim, who also operates a restaurant and bar, became acquainted with Arogege some time ago and he reportedly promised to help her with N20,000 to buy a baking oven to boost her business. Vanguard learned that Arogege asked the victim, sometimes last month, to come to his residence at 108, Ojuelegba Road, for the money. She went to his house, where Arogege allegedly gave her N2,000 pledging to give her the N20,000 in two installments. However, trouble allegedly started when the victim thanked Arogege and decided to take her leave. He was said to have asked her if she was not going to show appreciation for the N2,000 largesse, to which she replied: “The ‘thank you sir’ I said was to appreciate you.” Arogege reportedly said that was not the kind of appreciation he wanted, but the victim told him that was the only thing she could offer and that he should open the door and let her out. He was said to have beaten her into submission and then raped her. However, denying the allegation, Arogege said: “She is my girlfriend; I beat her up because she refused to have sex with me in appreciation of my kindness towards her. I did not rape her.”
